Soulful Sundays – Movember Matters

By now you have probably heard of Movember – where men in November collectively grow a mustache for the entire month. Maybe a couple of your good friends have grown a mustache, like some of our beloved male friends like Courtney Price and Mike, and several others. What you may not understand is why they are doing this – because let’s face it, although many men can still pull off a good ‘stache, we’re no longer in the 80s.

The Movember Foundation was started to raise awareness of men’s health issues, namely prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Much like wearing pink in October to draw awareness to breast cancer, men use their mustaches in November to draw awareness to these big men’s health issues. Having knowledge of what men need to be concerned with most regarding their health can assist a great deal in making a long-lasting and healthy life. Reminding men to get their annual check-up can help save lives.

Here are some reasons why men should get an annual check-up:

Prostate cancer – The odds of developing prostate cancer are alarming for those who haven’t heard about it. The fact is, one in seven men will be diagnosed, and one man will die from it every 19 minutes. Prostate cancer often doesn’t present symptoms, which makes the annual exam vital. The good news is that prostate cancer is generally slow-growing, so if detected early, there are many treatment options.

Testicular cancer – Men between the ages of 15 – 34 carry the highest risk of developing testicular cancer. Commonly, men will notice an unusual growth, which prompts seeing a doctor. At your annual exam, the doctor can check for lumps and begin the correct course of action early on.

Poor mental health – The body can be in perfect condition, but the mind may not be. Culturally, men tend to keep their problems inside rather than open up and let those around them help. This can have serious health impacts on the body and lead to devastating effects. Although speaking to a doctor couldn’t hurt, even speaking with a friend, loved one or a therapist can be a great start. Even tough men get the blues, and there is always someone who cares.

Physical inactivity – Heart disease is still the leading health problem for men. Physical activity and proper diet are the best ways to combat this disease. Speaking with your doctor about improving your physical activity is a safe way to get you on track to a healthier lifestyle.

For men, getting your annual check-up is important to your overall health, which is why we have Movember and the countless of ‘bros’ that are here – whether we feel good or not. Need a chat, call us or send us a message.
